Large scale repairs begin on Summer Palace

Yesterday, a repair and reconstruction project on the Summer Palace and
Tower of Buddhist Incense began; it is the largest such effort since
1949. The 50 million yuan project will be finished by the end of 2006 and
cover 6,804.17 square meters. The Tower of Buddhist Incense was built in
1750 and is a landmark within the Summer Palace. Its excellent
construction technology and rich cultural history are critical components
of Beijing's heritage.
