Taiwanese divorce rate jumps

Chinanews, Hong Kong, Apr. 24 - According to a recent report on Taiwanese
marriage and childbearing ages, the concept of matrimony has changed. The
island has entered an era of late marriages and increased divorces.
Statistics shows that a total of 160,000 couples registered to marry in
1983, while about 17,500 couples dissolved their bonds. However, newly
wed couples totaled only 131,400 in 2004, meanwhile the number of
divorced couples ballooned to 62,700. Taiwan has also been overwhelmed by
a trend of late marriage. The average wedding age of men rose to 30.7
last year from 28.2 twelve years ago and that of women rose to 26.8 from
the previous 24.6.
The Taiwanese fertility rate also hit a record low last year at 1.24
(each woman will bear an average of 1.24 children in her lifetime),
throwing Taiwanese population policy into desperate crisis.
