China imposes criminal sanction on credit card crimes

Chinanews, Mar. 7 - The 14th meeting of the Tenth National Standing
Committee of the National People's Congress (NSCNPC) passed the revision
of the Criminal Law on Feb 28, which lay out details on penalties for
credit card crimes, like fraudulent use of credit cards with fake ID and
holding and using counterfeit credit cards and vicious overdraft of
credit cards.
Base on the new law, those who commit credit card crimes could be
sentenced to life imprisonment and have all properties confiscated if the
amount of money involved were substantially large or the consequences of
the crime were particularly damaging.
With the fast growth of the credit card industry, crimes relating to bank
cards increase rapidly at the same time. There has also been a trend of
collusion between criminals at home and abroad and the collectivization
and specialization on bank card crimes.
In recent years, the amount of money involved in bank card crimes has
reached some 100 million yuan annually in China.
