Today, while hiking in New Mexico, my wife and I encountered a couple Chinese guys. At one of the
scenic spots, we took their photo, and they took ours. I asked what the Chinese word for 'smile'
was, was told 'xiao', said it before I snapped, they laughed, and I hope they got a good pic.

Afterwards, it occured to us that in the US we say 'cheese' not 'smile'. Now, 'cheese' is total
nonsense. I doubt the literal translation is 'cheese'. But, what do friends, family or total
strangers say to each other in Chinese before taking one another's picture?

Just curious.

Usually, 茄子 (qiézi) which means eggplant or aubergine and produces the same smile-like mouth

This is a good question.
Besides, 茄子 sometimes people say 七(qi), which sounds like chee

Sometimes, they won't say anything at all, but the person taking the picture will be counting out
loud 一,二... Then, while the uninitiated foreigner is still waiting for the 三,the guy
will quickly snap your picture. When taking a picture, I even had people laughing at me once when
I actually counted till three.

Alhazred -

I'd say that's because you actually smile when you say the word cheese with conviction.

Same way, a photographer recently came where I work for a group picture and he had us say ouistiti
because we do smile when we say that word.

Hmm... The one I normally use is:-

1, 2... 3

As suggested by gougou.

I like this approach - the articles would serve to summarize the key points and tie the key forum

New standards for drinking water to come out

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-19 09:56:23

(Source: Xinhua)

July 19 - China will soon promulgate a new set of national compulsory
standards on drinking water quality, a senior official from the Ministry
of Construction said here Tuesday.
The new standards represents the first revision of China's current
standards issued in 1985, before rapid industrialization left most of the
country's water bodies in pollution.
Zhang Yue, deputy head of the ministry's urban construction department,
told Xinhua that the new standards requires tests on over 100 water
quality indices, far more than the current 35 indices.
The new indices mainly have to do with organic pollutants and other
harmful substances in the water as a result of industrial pollution, he
said.
According to Zhang, the new standards is on a par with that of
moderately-developed countries.
Work on the new standards is being coordinated by the Standardization
Administration of China and involves the Ministry of Construction and the
Ministry of Health, in response to rising public call for the revision of
the outdated standards.
The Ministry of Health published the draft version of the new standards
on May 19 to solicit public opinions

China to cultivate instructors on marriage and family

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-14 17:33:46

Instructors on marriage and family are popular in the West, where 500
citizens have one on the average. While in China they are very few. (file

Chinanews, Beijing, July 14 C Recently, All-China Women's Federation and
China International Marriage & Family Association jointly launched
training programs for instructors on marriage and family. A series of
training courses have firstly started in Changchun and Guangzhou. Those
trainees will receive registered certificates after passing examinations
in late July.
Li Men, an instructor from Jilin Psychoanalysis Center for Women and
Teenagers, believed that the rate of stable family and marriage in China
was less than 30%. More than 70% of Chinese families had various problems
such as extramarital relations, divorce, single-parent children, domestic
violence, etc. Currently the traditional Chinese family structure is
facing grim challenges.
Instructors on marriage and family are popular in the West, where 500
citizens have one on the average. While in China they are very few.
In China, such instructors mainly give guidance to couples in four
categories: First is the brides and bridegrooms--to teach them knowledge
of marriage and love. Second, married for 1-2 years and having
difficulties adapting to their new life--to help them solve various
family problems. Third, after the couples have children and thus heavy
family burdens-- to teach them how to share family duties. Forth, couples
claiming that their marriage is over--to give them psychological and
financial guidance.
Experts believe the emergence of instructors on marriage and family not
only will help to provide new job opportunities for citizens, but also
improve the qualities of marriage and thus build a harmonious society.

China prepares Olympic menu with Chinese characteristics

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 14:15:57

(Source: Xinhua)

June 21- A special "recommended menu" with an emphasis on Chinese cuisine
is being prepared for the athletes competing in the the 2008 Beijing
Olympics, a commerce official said on Tuesday.
Deng Tingfu of the Ministry of Commerce told Xinhua that to highlight the
Chinese characteristics of the Olympics most of the 100 courses on the
menu would be Chinese.
The menu will be arranged by the China Cuisine Association in line with
the requests of the Preparation Committee of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Deng said that an expert panel would be responsible for evaluating the
nutrition of each course before they are exhibited at the Second China
Catering Exposition in Xi'an of northwest China's Shaanxi Province on
October 18 to 20.
"We will present the dishes to get advice from visitors, experts from the
catering and sports industries and athletes representatives for the 2008
Olympic Games," Deng said at a press conference for the exposition.
He said the dishes would be served in simulated dining rooms for
sportsmen. Modification based on the advice of experts and general
visitors would be made before the recommended menu was formally submitted
to the preparation committee of the 2008 Beijing Olympics who had the
final say on the issue, he noted.

Expert: Not China driving world oil price up

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-30 17:07:15

Chinanews, May 30 C Chief of the Energy Resources Institute of the
National Development and Reform Commission Zhou Dadi pointed out at an
international academic forum May 28 that it is not China that has driven
world oil price up.
According to the facts presented by the authoritative scholar Zhou Dadi,
China's oil consumption today only accounts for 8 percent of the world
oil consumption; oil trade volume in China has not even reached 6 percent
of that in the whole world; and China's oil and gas import is far lower
than that of the US and Japan. Besides, it is also indicated by the fact
that China's oil import remained on the decline while world oil prices
reached record high last year.
Zhou said that world oil price rising did not result from the deficiency
of the oil and gas resources, but from diverse reasons, such as political
conflicts and instability of major oil production countries, which affect
the world oil supply; conflicts of interests between the oil export
countries and oil and gas industries, which slow the enhancement of the
oil supply; as well as abnormal wave of financial speculation, and
sustained booming of the world economy.
China's consumption of energy resources has increased at an accelerated
speed in the past 5 years. As China's industrialization and urbanization
are far from completed, infrastructure construction is being undertaken
on a massive scale, Zhou added. But China's present energy consumption
mainly depends on coal. And self-reliance is the key energy consumption
policy of China, with 90 percent of the one-off energy consumption
realizing self-support.
Zhou also indicated that China has put forward a new scientific approach
concept to development and the need to build a conservation-minded
society, to strive to develop various renewable energy resources. China
is currently in the lead in world in the utilization of the solar energy.
Moreover, bilateral and multilateral win-win cooperation in energy is
part of China's diplomatic policy of peace and peaceful development.

The Tan Kah Kee Stadium in Xiamen City welcomed the Red Coat Marching
Band, a world renowned century-old gold medal winning orchestra from the
State of Georgia, on May 24. This luxurious orchestra with 320 members

learnt that they have flown to Xiamen in four charter flights on two days
and reserved three hotels in the city and therefore were the biggest

Pictured, the 420.5-meter-tall Jinmao Tower, current landmark of
Shanghai, is surrounded by tall buildings which have been completed or
are under construction.

Chinanews, May 17 - According to Shanghai's media, Dr. Hu Yugen, head of
an innovation team specialized in high-rise building construction
technologies, revealed that during the 11th Five-Year Plan period,
Shanghai's high-rise buildings is expected to break the 500 meter mark.
At present, all high-rise buildings are designed by foreigners and the
Chinese party is in charge of construction only.
In the future, Shanghai will also be able to independently design more
